He is obligated to take care of this problem but since you have split you should just take the $200.00 because unless you have a police report or a signed document stating that he will take care of these damages he could turn around and not pay you anything..
You’re seeing his true colors. Yes, he is responsible since he admitted to the fact that he damaged the car. I hope that there was a police report or photos taken of the damage. I gather that you are ‘down under’ (my fav place). If anything, this would be a small claims court issue.
