Can you drive a car with a missing rear bumper in NJ?

I know NJ requires both front and rear license plates but the plate is on the trunk portion so it’s still on the car.

I was involved in a hit and run accident yesterday I got rear ended and the other driver took off before I got a good look. :( My rear bumper was hanging and smashed to bits and the officer removed it because he said it can’t hang.

Since it was drivable the officer tole me to drive it home but didn’t state if I could continue to drive it with the bumper missing.

I’ve only got liability insurance on my car the insurance wont cover the repair costs. And I can not afford to get the repairs done right now.

No it is a violation and you will get cited for it. All standard equipment must be in place on any vehicle

You will get a summons in NJ if you don’t have a bumper. The vehicle has to be “in tact.”
