This has happened to a few friends of mine, but it was sorted out after I did a little research. Brawl is dual layered, and is apparently the first Wii game to make use of the dual layer disc system; when the disc is inserted it runs a stealth update (Which wouldnt have effected your mod) which enables the Wii to run dual layered discs.
Basically the problem lies with the Wii reading the disc, do you smoke in the same room as the Wii or maybe have the Wii in a dusty area? The Wii is very picky with Dual layered discs because of a little dirt! Try using a disc cleaner (Available in virtually all consumer electronic stores) or if you feel confident enough, open the Wii up and give it a clean (Although this could void warrenty).
Definitely get a disc cleaner before you think about sending it to get repaired!
I have set up a Smash Bros Brawl Website to share info and freind codes and arrange online games and tournaments. If you are interested it is located at
